Slappy Cakes

In a country that tries to protect us from everything and anything it seemed unlikely that a restaurant would be allowed to put in a large griddle in the middle of a table.  But thankfully Slappy Cakes is here to save the day, and deliciously at that.

I was surprised when I first heard of this delicious idea I truly didn’t think it could exist as I imagined but it does.  They will make the pancakes for you or they will give you a bottle of batter, several varieties to choose from, different topping and then you go to town making your own creations right at the table.  They even have gluten free batter.

Some of the Sweet toppings are Chocolate Chips, White Chocolate Chips, Butterscotch Chips, Apples, Bananas, Blueberries, and Orange Marmalade. The Savory toppings are Bacon, Sausage (vegan too), Peanut Butter, Cheddar Cheese, Goat Cheese, Roasted Mushrooms, and Chopped Scallions.  This is Oregon so of course the maple syrup is 100% organic, vegan whole grain batter, and gluten free batter.

They have Slappy Hour which is from 2pm- 5pm with a 1 drink minimum.  Slappy Cakes features local spirits, Stumptown Coffee, teas, and Columbia Valley Organic Juices.

Twitter comments;

@MakeMeSomePie – Slappy Cakes is pretty awesome. Good adult morning beverages as well. Stick of bacon to stir your Bloody Mary FTW!

@365DaysToANewMe – Slappy Cakes rocks! Love making your own pancakes at the table. Buttermilk w/ bacon crumbles is amazing! GF batter too!

@IntuitiveBridge – The best part about Slappy Cakes is the bacon crumbles plus dried cherries in a made-by-you buckwheat pancake. So awesome.

From Slappy Cakes website:

Our outdoor courtyard is a beautifully landscaped area where we grow our herbs, vegetables, and berries. We compost our food waste from the kitchen, and next spring we will add an outdoor chef’s table available for private parties and community events.

Open 8-5 everyday but it seems like it would be a great late night place. Hopefully they will expand their hours. At times they have lines like popular places do but I was able to go around 1 on a weekday and it was fine.

  1. I am SO down to come out to Slappy Cakes one of these mornings. Anyone down for a meetup? 42nd and Belmont was one of my old stomping grounds from way back. Hope to see some other Pouregon fans out there.
