Spunky Monkey

by Mike on January 17, 2011

Doesn’t that just roll off the tongue?  Spunky Monkey House of Coffee.  Spunky Monkey House of Coffee.  Spunky Monkey House of Coffee.  I love it!  And one of my spies loves their coffee as well.

Spunky Monkey Coffee Roasters is an independent coffee roaster, tea blender, and chai creator located in Portland, OR.

We base our existence on the belief that great tasting food can be health food when natural & organic ingredients (real food!) are used, processed sugar is reduced, and ingredients are prepared and combined for maximum healthy impact and superior taste.

Located in the Kerns neighborhood at 35 NE 20th they serve Ginger Caramel Latte, Smoky Chai, Honey Cardamom Latte, all house-roasted coffee with organic, local milk; hot sandwiches; gluten-free waffles. All of their syrups and sauces are agave-sweetened.

It wouldn’t be Portland if they didn’t have a Bike-Thru Window. They offer free wifi like any good coffee house should.  Go check them out because you know the words Spunky Monkey House of Coffee is going to keep popping up in your head.

Clockworks Cafe and Cultural Center

by Mike on January 3, 2011

Clockworks Cafe and Cultural Center is one of the largest coffee shops I have seen.  It is a non-profit cafe and cultural center.  All proceeds from their endeavor support the community programming of the Culture Shock Community Project.

THEY ARE A CAFE – Clockworks proudly features world-famous STUMPTOWN coffee and two menus: Good For The Body – A collection of food that is healthy, organic, and great for you (and tastes great too) & Good For The Soul – A menu of goodies that are…well let’s face it….comfort food. Great tasting food that will love to indulge.

THEY ARE A PERFORMANCE VENUE – Clockworks features tons of performances that include music of all kinds, but are not limited to that. They feature poetry, dance, theater, improv comedy, film, and much more.

THEY ARE AN ACADEMY – Clockworks will feature community classes of art, culture, language, photography, dance, as well as a fair share of interesting and useful community knowledge. Featuring classes both for kids AND adults!

THEY ARE A COMMUNITY CENTER – The greatest part of the venue is that it is available to partner with other organizations, businesses and individuals to put on your own events.

The Goodbean Coffee

by Mike on December 27, 2010

The Goodbean Company won gold at the 2010 Oregon Best Coffee in Oregon Championship.  They were medalists in three categories among the best coffee roasters in Oregon.

Established in 1990, GoodBean Coffee is Southern Oregon’s original and premier coffee roasting company. Founded two decades ago in small-town America. GoodBean is still 100% family-owned and operated. GoodBean is housed in Jacksonville’s Tablerock Billiard and Saloon, a national historic building circa 1852.

GoodBean coffee still roasts fresh to order. They have a retail coffee shop and bakery as well as wholesale and a consultation and design service for those who wish to open their own coffee business. I am guessing lots of you have you consider opening your own coffee shop, here is your hookup.

Find them at
165 South Oregon St.
Jacksonville, OR 97530

Guapo Comics and Coffee

by Mike on December 14, 2010

I have a special place in my heart for this location.  In the 90′s I owned a comic book store and know what it is all about.  When I first saw this place I thought it was such a great idea.  The comics and coffee are owned separately sharing one space.  I love the idea.

There are a lot of local roasters to choose from in the Portland area and picking the right one was a long process for the coffee half of Guapo Comics and Coffee.  From the Menu:

“I considered all sorts of local roasters, but the only one I found to not only brew a great cup of strong coffee, but to also pull a shot worthy of Americanos and Mochas alike, was Allann Brothers.  Founded in 1972, Allann Brothers Roasts out of Albany and deals in Organic and Fair Trade beans. They are meticulous about the quality and conformity of the beans and roast to ensure that you always get the best each bean has to offer.”

And their Mochas?  ”Mocha lovers will be happy to hear we use Ghirardelli white and milk chocolates. Instead of the pre-melted liquid syrups too often found, Ghirardelli premium powdered chocolate melts right in the cup. Our mochas verge on sinful.”

They also bring you a staggering selection of flavors to create a drink all your own. With 47 Torani syrups to choose from the possibilities are endless. Enjoy the tried and true Caramel, Vanilla, and Hazelnut flavors or go out on a limb and add Cheesecake or Butterscotch to your favorite drink. Any way you mix it we are happy to serve it. They also offer 12 Torani sugar free flavors so that nobody misses out on the fun.

Yelp loves them showing 4.5 stars out of 5.

Ela M. – Guapo manages to be both a cute coffee shop (with good coffee) and have enough of a stock to bring some comic nerd respect.

Ana H. -love the coffee and cookies.  love the sweet reading nook.

Im Han K. – Uh – why haven’t I found out about this place sooner?
