Zach’s Shack

by Mike on June 14, 2010

Zach's Shack

It’s hard to find a good hot dog restaurant as most places treat it as a gimmick or a second thought.  I stumbled across Zach’s Shack (it was actually a shack, or trailer, at the time) six years ago; “Dogs with snap,” is their catch phrase.  You have had the soft, grocery store hot dogs.  Snap is what makes the good hot dogs stand out.

I was having a crappy birthday five years ago.  It was just a few months after my divorce. I had made some plans with friends but the event fell apart due to weather and because I don’t announce my birthday too often I don’t think my friends knew it was my birthday.  I was left twiddling my thumbs. Then it hit me, “I’ll go to Zach’s Shack and grab a hot dog with cheddar cheese, onions, and tomatoes.”  It had been a while but it was just the right thing to treat myself.

Back then it was just a trailer around 40th and Hawthorne.  I cruised over there thinking my birthday might be salvaged but then I arrived to find the Shack closed.  Are you kidding me?  What else could go wrong?

If I hadn’t been so annoyed at how nothing was going right that day and just driven up the street about 10 blocks I would have seen that Zach’s Shack had just found a large and more stable setting.  I stumbled across them again about two years ago. For the sake of my own sanity and hope that I still have some luck, we will assume there was not flyers on the old shack saying that they had just moved up the street.

I really like Zach’s and it’s probably best they aren’t too close to my house. They have build-your-own hot dogs and fries. It isn’t a huge place which adds to their ambiance but they have a few TV’s and you can fit a decent group in there. Oh, and a table top video game.

Of course they have drinks; beer on tap and mixed drinks.  They are a few doors down from Por Que No? and a few more doors down from Apizza Scholls.

Yelp Reviews:

Terence K. – Zack’s Shack has everything it’s supposed to. And it’s GREAT!

Tami I. – I have been a patron at Zachs Shack since it was down the street in ,well a shack.   They never disappoint!

Joshua M. – I liked the ambiance of Zach’s.

Megan O. (Seattle) – I love coming here when I’m in Portland. They have a variety of dogs at very reasonable prices.

Ground Kontrol

Pac-Man Ghosts and Galaga Aliens, ahhhhh.

Ground Kontrol, depending on your age, is either the coolest place you know about or the place you can’t believe you didn’t learn about until now. Over 90 video games from the ’70′s, ’80′s, and 90′s? 26 Pinball machines?  Beer?  Yep.

Ground Kontrol just recently started offering beer on tap. One of their contributors tested his driving abilities on Cruisin’ USA after several drinks:

Happy Hour Everyday 5-7pm
* $2 PBR & High Life tallboys
* $2.25 Session, Session Black, Coors Light
* $2.50 microbrews, imports & cider (draught & bottles)

Tuesdays they have Rock Band night at 8pm and find your inner rock star. Ground Kontrol has two levels. The main level has the video games, stage, and bar. The second level holds the pinball machines. Wednesday’s can be one of their quieter days so bring some friends and make a party of it. Also, according to their event schedule they have free play nights at the end of the month on Wednesday. Click here for more events.

By the way, I destroy people on Street Fighter with Chun Li.

Deschutes Brewery Portland Public House

by Mike on May 26, 2010

Deschutes Brewery in Portland is a gorgeous place.  Big, open but still with a warm, cozy feeling.  I went there Friday night after listening to an author speak at Powell’s and had a fantastic burger (Topped with Carlton Farms Applewood-Smoked Bacon and Rogue Creamery Oregon Blue Cheese) and ridiculous dessert. Here’s their full menu.

The Portland brew pub produces all the traditional Deschutes year-round beers and seasonal offerings, including flagship beers Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Black Butte Porter. The brew pub’s 18 taps also feature a selection of seasonal and experimental beers developed and brewed on-site exclusively for the Portland pub by brewer Cam O’Connor.

Coconut Cafe

by Mike on May 17, 2010

All of us at the Coconut Cafe, owners and staff alike , strive daily to bring you the authentic coffee house experience. Hand crafted latte and espresso drinks are our standard.

Reading the reviews online show that the Coconut Cafe has won over the hearts of the locals making this truly a neighborhood place.  They wanted it to be a place for neighborhood eats, treats, chat and hand crafted artisan coffee; it seemed to work. They feature live and local music Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, as well as a local artist gallery.

David – The Coconut Cafe is great and I highly recommend it! The coffee is great and so are their Peruvian Empanadas. They have live music several times a week as well, which is excellent! I love the intimate setting. The best thing about this place is that they have turned the local neighborhood more into an actual community. It is the perfect place to meet new interesting people and strike up great conversations.

Robert - The owners make their own food every day. The coffee is good, the tea is fresh and the custom/specialty drinks are creative! Aside from the good food and service, the cafe itself is comfortable both inside and out. You feel like you want to stay a while when you go.‎

Nader – What I like about the Coconut is the warm and friendly (and quite talkative) owner, and the comfy and remarkably spacious interior. It almost feels like you’re in a friend’s living room, and the colors and artwork are very pleasant.
