Wandering Goat Coffee Company

by Mike on May 6, 2010

Wandering Goat is a small locally owned and community operated business in Eugene dedicated to bringing fresh perspectives to the craft of traditional artisan roasting and coffee and espresso preparation. They’re committed to seeking out the best coffees from anywhere as long as they are produced in a sustainable way, both for the earth and the farmers who produce it. Each pound is roasted to order, this small batch roasting allows them to guarantee the freshness and excellence of each pound of coffee they offer.

Wandering Goat is also a bakery, community, art, music and performance venue. Their baked goods are vegan, made with organic ingredients, and baked fresh each day. They also offer a wide variety of herbal, green, black and mate teas, homemade chai, organic soups, wine, locally brewed beers on tap, many organic bottled beers, organic mimosas, and the legendary Bud-a-ccino (Oatmeal stout with a shot of Chupacabra espresso on top). Wandering Goat is host to a number of ongoing community events such as Centrifugal Cinema featuring independent films, summer lot bbqs, and the already famous, annual, Mr. Whiteaker Competition. As they say, you can “Get your goat on” at these locations.

Ninkasi

by Mike on May 3, 2010

“Ninkasi — named after the Sumerian goddess of brewing — is the seventh-largest brewery in Oregon after just four years and one of the fastest growing in the country. Its Total Domination IPA lives up to its name by being the best-selling 22-ounce bottle of beer in the state and among the top 10 in the U.S”

I will admit that I probably gravitated toward it because it sounds like some badass ninja but apparently it is Sumerian, whatever the reason you first tried it you probably stuck with it and they’ve grown like wildfire.

The Ninkasi tasting room opened in November 2009. Located in the brewery building, it has been remodelled and is a great place to taste the current seasonals as well as the flagship Ninkasi lines – Total Domination, Tricerahops, and Believer. They are open 12am to 9pm everyday.

The brewery now features a brand-new 30 barrel system, and in less than two years has been able to anchor itself as Eugene’s flagship brewery, enjoying great support throughout the region. When not making and selling beer Ninkasi is doing what they can to support all forms of the arts, from music events, bands, theater, dance, and fine arts, to festivals and neighborhood parties.

Beers

Tricerahops Double IPA – (What a great name) Hops, hops and more hops, combine with enough malt to make this a very balanced 8.8% beer. Floral and smooth, dry hopped for aroma, an outstanding Double IPA.
8.8%alc./vol. 100+ ibus. Always available in 22 oz bottles, and on draft.

Believer Double Red – A rich deep red with roasted malt and caramel notes, balanced by plentiful hops. Brewed for the believers of Ninkasi, delicious and satisfying, a wonderful representation of what the Northwest beer scene is all about.
6.9 % alc./vol. 60ibus. Always available in 22 oz bottles, and on draft.

Sleigh’R - A delicious northwest seasonal brewed with winter in mind. A dark double alt, malty, nourishing and delicious, it’s sure to keep the winter at bay, and yes, Sleigh’r does rock!
7.2% alc./vol. 50 ibus.

Spring Reign – Spring forward with this refreshing seasonal ale. Notes of toasted malt up front, finished with a bright and refreshing Northwest hop aroma, it’s a session beer that everyone can enjoy!
6% alc./vol. 38 ibus.
